An individual made nearly half a million dollars on the ouster of the Venezuelan leader shortly prior to it was publicly declared, raising questions about whether someone profited from non-public details of American actions.
Wagers on Polymarket, a crypto-powered platform, that the leader would be removed from office by the end of January surged in the period preceding Donald Trump announced on Saturday that Maduro had been apprehended.
A single trader, which joined the platform last month and placed four wagers, all on Venezuela, made more than $nearly half a million from a initial bet of $32,537.
It remains unclear. The user had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.
Platform data shows that traders put the odds of a political change at just under 7% in the midday period of the prior Friday.
Yet the odds had increased to 11% by shortly before midnight and skyrocketed in the morning of January 3rd, indicating a sharp shift in betting activity immediately prior to the public announcement was made.
"This specific wager has all the signs of a transaction based on confidential knowledge," said a financial reform advocate.
A handful of other platform users also made significant sums from bets on the same outcome.
Politicians are starting to take note.
A bill introduced on Monday seeks to ban federal workers from participating on forecasting platforms if they have "insider details" related to a bet.
Forecasting platforms have surged in popularity in the United States, with traders able to wager on everything from sports to current affairs.
The industry encountered regulatory challenges under the last presidential term. Yet it has found a more favorable environment during the current presidency.
Trading on insider information is a crime in the stock market, but there are less oversight in the prediction market arena.
An official representative for Kalshi said their site "explicitly prohibits insider trading of any form."
