The minister said that the MoD is “investigating” cars from China within its fleets, however emphasised that security is a concern in every contemporary cars.
Our department has a fleet of thousands of cars in the MoD and Chinese ones represent a very small number.
However whether you’re driving a Chinese car or a car from another country, our instruction to our staff is to avoid connecting Ministry of Defence devices into their vehicle, not to have discussions at a classified level in any car, due to the increasing risks of eavesdropping that exist in all vehicle, to restrict those secret talks in secure locations. That’s a prudent and reasonable thing for anyone worried about safety.
When it was suggested that it would be wise for the MoD to cease using every Chinese vehicles, the minister responded: That is precisely what we’re investigating at the moment.”
This revelation comes as claims from Norway and Denmark have alerted the United Kingdom to the existence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese electric buses, which could enable China to switch off buses and cause disruption to transport systems.
